1:05 pm - A step closer to the bionic man
|
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091202/ap_on_he_me/eu_italy_robotic_hand
When I 1st started college, I was an EE major because I wanted to go into the field of cybernetics. As a kid I would see on tv feel-good shows about people who lost body parts who started using prosthetics to improve their lives, etc and I would always think "we can do much better than this!" Maybe it was too much influence by 'The 6 million dollar man' and 'the bionic woman'. :) Like engineering in general, its still something I would enjoy to be involved in. I just think this stuff is just awesome.

5:06 pm - The Prisoner
|
I am almost through the third episode. It feels much more like Charlie Jade than it does The Prisoner. They have thrown in some cute homages though.
I like the explanation of #1. I also like: "Everything is suspicious if you look at it properly."
At a recent con, someone pointed out how like the original The Prisoner, Lost is.

2:09 pm - More Wave stuff
|
If you want to add me: shadowstone at googlewave dot com or shadowstone at gmail dot com
also, here is a link to the robots available: http://wave-samples-gallery.appspot.com/
EDIT: It seems all those are still in the development/testing phase. Only the ones in the extensions wave we all have are the ones that are fully functional.

10:55 pm - Google wave invites
|
I have 7 wave invites left. If you want one, give me an e-mail to send it to.
EDIT. In playing around with wave, I find that in firefox some extension setting is preventing embedded videos from showing. I haven't found how to fully fix it yet.

2:44 pm - Jersey Girl
|
I had DVRed Jersey Girl last week and I am watching it now. I do agree that it's a pretty bad movie. Bad as in boring. It like tries to be a drama, a romance, and a feel-good movie but I think it dreams of being a comedy. It fails at all of them. So many good comedic actors gone to waste in the film. The one good thing is that Liv is sooo hot.
I have always appreciated how View Askew Films portray women as sexually self-confidant.

6:58 pm - Philcon
|
Ok, I am bad at reviewing my con weekends because I leave out all kinds of details...
As many people know, the ave. age of attendees at Philcon is dead. I did see some younger people around though. One group of late teens and a few others in their college years, so that was nice.
I also realize that I don;t want to moderate panels anymore. Not that I had a bad experience, but I found I enjoy them more if I do not feel ultimately responsible for them running well.
It was also different in that there wasn't a big hang-out in KT's and my room as there usually is. There were pretty much no parties on friday, but there were 2 decent ones on saturday but it was still a somewhat early night. I also never even set foot in the green room or the con suite. Weird.
The flirting panel was lots of fun as usual, but we didn't talk much about flirting. I think in the future we should assume the people who come to the flirting panel have things like 'wash yourself' and 'brush your teeth' down ok. Kind of like you should know the alphabet before going to a class on reading books.
The anime room wasn't just anime this year, other programing was in it too. That kinda messed things up for me because I wanted to spend more time there but every time I was free there was non-anime stuff going on.
My panels all went fine and I enjoyed a few others like the start trek one, the marvel one, the diversity in SF one, the LHC one, and the mysteries of science one, even if a guy in the audience kept going on about how poltergeists are scientifically proven and wondering why dont SETI work with the UFO-ologists.
I got to see lots of people I know and meet a few I didn't but I feel like this year I didn't get to spend much time with anybody.
The best part may have been getting to have 2 shots worth of Bushmills 21 year :) Yum!

4:14 pm - The woes of my business
|
Last week I had 11 patients scheduled, 5 ended up coming in. This week I had 12 patients scheduled. 5 ended up coming in.
Yes, I charge a fee for missed appointments, but if its a new patient who then never comes in, not much I can do about it.
The good excuses were: "My son is sick today", "I need to reschedule the appointment (calling within the proper time-frame)".
The bad/stupid excuses were: "I dont feel well", "my symptoms are confusing to me. If I can figure them out I will come back", "my spouse doesn't want me to pay to see you", "You should just tell me everything over the phone/e-mail instead (for free)", "I am too busy to make these changes (from someone who is retired and literally makes his own schedule)". And then of course there are the ones who just don't show up and I never hear from them again.
If people don't want to come in, why do they make appointments in the 1st place? and why do they make an appointment a week or more in advance and then wait til the DAY OF the appointment to give the lame-ass excuses?
